2009 – Alex Kindel, Flute, Grand Ledge High School 2009 KCB April Concert Program Notes
Alex is 14 years old and is a freshman at Grand Ledge High School. In addition to being a talented flutist, he is also a composer and a viola player. He discovered his love for music in fourth grade at Wacousta Elementary School, where he was encouraged to pursue flute studies and composition by his music teacher, Ellen Hoard. Alex has studied flute with Dr. Tess Miller since the summer between fourth and fifth grade, and currently plays flute with the Grand Ledge High School Wind Symphony under the direction of Mr. Christopher Blackmer. He started playing the viola a year after picking up the flute, and is in his first year as a violist with the Mid-Michigan Youth Symphony. Alex started writing music soon after learning to play the recorder in fourth grade, and currently takes composition and theory lessons with Mr. Scott Harding. He has won the Lansing Symphony Orchestra Young Composers Competition twice, and has presented his original compositions at the Michigan Honors Composition Concert for the last five years. Alex hopes to be a successful composer and plans to continue playing both flute and viola. Alex will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Kalamazoo Concert Band, and will appear as guest soloist on the KCB’s Spring Concert on Saturday, April 25, 2009. He will be performing “Poem” by Charles Griffes.
